InvoYouth study – Civic involvement of young people

This study, developed within the InvoYouth Erasmus+ project, explores the motivation, attitudes, and barriers related to youth civic engagement in Bucharest. Through a mixed-method approach that included desk research, a focus group, and an online survey (171 complete responses), the research provides insights into how and why young people engage—or disengage—from community life.

Key findings highlight that although young people highly value civic participation (especially voting, volunteering, and expressing opinions on social/political issues), their actual involvement in decision-making processes remains limited. Motivation for engagement is driven by the desire to gain experience, personal development, helping others, and social interaction. However, participation is often conditional, influenced by peer pressure, incentives, or perceived personal benefits.

The report also outlines significant barriers to civic involvement: lack of confidence in making a difference, poor promotion of opportunities, and lack of youth-friendly infrastructure. Educational and cultural activities emerged as the most appealing domains for future involvement.

This study contributes to understanding how youth participation can be better supported through targeted strategies, awareness efforts, and improved recognition mechanisms for civic action.
